The 2026 DOP and the Eternal Generation "Controversy"

In episode 2 of the Advance video/podcast, Tom Loghry explains the purpose of the 2026 Declaration of Principles and addresses the "controversy" raised by Jefferson Vann's article on the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son.

KEY POINTS:
1. The 2026 DOP aspires to define what it means to be Advent Christian pastor or church; it is not the plumb line of whether a person is a Christian or not. See the 2026 DOP Preamble here.
2. The doctrine of eternal generation does not hinge on the debate over how to translate monogenes.
3. “Eternally begotten” is the most biblically faithful and careful way to explain the relationship between the Father and the Son, a better articulation than “eternally proceeds” (wording which Jeff originally supported on the task force, but now also critiques).
4. Advent Christians (including Jeff) have supported this kind of articulation - see here.
5. The larger Christian tradition supports this articulation - see here.
6. The current Declaration of Principles uses the language “begotten” (see principle 2 here); the Executive Council supported the rendering “eternally begotten” in light of the case that has been presented.
7. Jeff supported the 2026 DOP as part of the Task Force (only difference being “eternally proceeds" instead of present “eternally begotten”), working with Tom in crafting the careful articulation that has been presented; his equivocation is perplexing.

PLEASE NOTE: I (Tom) am not trying to cultivate any division here. Jeff made a strong statement encouraging Advent Christians to reject this important proposal upon which much time and energy has been spent. In response, I am laying out the truth of the matter at hand and the perplexities of his turnabout so that others may see full the picture. I desire the best for our denomination and for him; I regret that this difference has emerged.
